Eagles’ defensive end Derek Barnett, represented by agent Drew Rosenhaus, is reportedly assessing the market for potential opportunities to play elsewhere, according to sources shared with ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Monday.
While the Eagles have intentions of retaining Barnett, they acknowledge the depth of their pass-rush lineup might limit his on-field time. Currently, Barnett is a part of a strong edge-rushing unit that includes fellow defensive ends Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat, along with outside linebackers Haason Reddick and Nolan Smith. Should he remain with the Eagles, it’s likely he would adopt a rotational role. Teams have until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday to finalize their rosters with 53 players.
Derek Barnett, 27, was chosen as the 14th overall pick by the Eagles in the 2017 draft. He has accrued 21.5 sacks over the span of six years. His standout season was in 2019 when he achieved 6.5 sacks, 22 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, and forced two fumbles.
During his time at the University of Tennessee, Barnett achieved the all-time sacks record with 33, surpassing the record previously held by the legendary Hall of Famer Reggie White (32), who had played for the Eagles and Green Bay Packers.
Barnett encountered a setback last year when he suffered a torn ACL during Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, causing him to miss the remainder of the season. However, he made a full recovery and participated extensively in training camp.
As for Haason Reddick, he has been dealing with a thumb injury that required surgery to repair ligament damage, stemming from a practice session against the Cleveland Browns on August 14. Reddick expressed his intention to play in the season opener against the New England Patriots and is still determining the appropriate protective measures for his injured thumb on game day.
